Mixing Chamber / Motor Head Assembly

The mixing chamber is a direct drive design that eliminates all maintenance associated with timing belt and gear drive systems. The mixing chamber is made from heavy walled steel tubing that is externally reinforced for maximum rigidity.

The mixing chamber door features quick release knobs that allow for simple, easy access to the interior of the chamber. The door is hinged at the bottom and swings down to allow complete access to the mixing blades and driveshaft. The hinged door eliminates all ergonomic and mechanical problems associated with the removal of fabricated components from the mixer. Mixers above 3 cubic feet/minute include two chamber doors.

The heavy-duty mixing driveshaft is made from high strength ground and polished steel shafting and is direct coupled to the primary drive motor.

The standard mixing blades are faced with ¼" thick tungsten carbide and are either a fixed or adjustable position blade depending on size. Pin style (fixed angle) blades are standard on models MI50XL through MI300XL. Models MI500XL and larger feature threaded blades as standard with pin style blades as an option. The mixing blades are overlapping and sized to allow a build up of mixed material that creates the lining of the inside of the mixing chamber. This lining provides an optimum relationship between the end of the blade and the interior diameter of the chamber. It is constantly maintained by each blade as the mixing shaft rotates. With this lining as an intentional part of the mixing chamber, the daily cleaning consists of only removing the build up on the mixing blades and driveshaft. This lining also prevents through flowing aggregate from constantly abrading the mixing chamber, thus improving chamber life.

The mixing chamber is designed to be as rugged yet simple as possible. The long lasting mixing blades, close tolerance regenerative lining, and high speed rotation provide an extremely intense blending action with a minimum amount of cleaning and maintenance.

Optional Aggregate Metering

Metering of aggregate into the mixing chamber is greatly affected by the specific aggregate being processed and the required feed accuracy. For this reason, several common metering methods are used: 

  • Fixed Orifice Slidegate - Used for consistent, free flowing materials  
  • Volumetric Addition - Used for the highest level of feed accuracy for particularly fine or non-free flowing materials  
  • Adjustable Stroke Butterfly Valve - Used when a sealed environment is required and metering accuracy is not as critical  
  • Loss-in-Weight Addition - Used for high accuracy of virtually any material. This system utilizes high tolerance load cells and PLC weight addition control.

Optional Controls

For units that require controls capability in addition to the basic mixing chamber, all primary electrical components are housed in a NEMA 12 dust tight disconnect enclosure. All components are thoughtfully arranged for ease of operation and maintenance.

The control system has a master safety relay with mixing door limit switch and emergency stop pushbuttons on both the machine cabinet and the operator station.

There are two modes of mixer operation: 

  • "HAND" – This is a manual mode of operation with which any or all aspects of the mixer are operated via two position switches located on the door of the main electrical enclosure. 
  • "AUTO" – In this mode of operation, all aspects of the mixer are run from a remote panel located at the operator’s station.

A single three-phase electrical service is required. An internal KVA transformer housed in the enclosure provides the 120-volt control power.

Optional Pumping System

For mixing systems that require the accurate addition of water, resins, or other modifiers, Palmer offers a broad range of liquid pumping systems. Call with your specific requirements and we will develop a system to meet you exact needs. Liquid addition controls capability range from dc pump motor speed control to our high-end mass flow pumping systems.

Optional Air Jet Liquid Addition

The use of a low pressure air jet system for the introduction of liquids to the mixing chamber is a common option. The air assist serves two primary purposes. The first is to keep the liquid inlets of the mixer clear during the mixing and purge cycles. The second is to partially atomize the liquid entering the chamber to aid in dispersion and mixing.

Each jet assembly is easily removable making calibration at the true point of entry simple. Unlike other systems, calibration with the M-Series is directly out of the orifice feeding the mixing chamber, reducing calibration error.

The air jet system is fully adjustable via flow controls located in the air valve enclosure. The separate NEMA 12 enclosure greatly simplifies maintenance and reduces the potential of valve failure due to dirt or impact.
